Introducing International Higher Level Teaching Assistant Status
Are you a teaching assistant ready to take the next step in your career? Would you like to gain recognition for the impact you already make in the classroom - and open new opportunities for responsibility, autonomy and professional growth?
Our internationally accessible Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) course is designed to help you do exactly that.
We support experienced teaching assistants in international schools to achieve HLTA Status - a recognised professional accreditation that proves you’re ready to take on a bigger role, including leading whole-class learning. You can complete the entire course and assessment online, from anywhere in the world.
What is HLTA?
HLTA Status recognises the work of experienced teaching assistants who are already going above and beyond in their roles. As an HLTA, you are trusted to take on more responsibility in the classroom - including covering lessons, planning learning activities with teachers, and supporting pupils with a range of needs.
HLTAs are essential to schools. They raise standards, ease teacher workload and provide flexible support where it’s needed most.
Earning this status gives you:
-
Professional recognition of your skills and experience
-
The ability to lead classes and cover teacher absence
-
Opportunities for career progression - including further training
-
Confidence and credibility to take on greater responsibility
HLTA is a powerful next step for any teaching assistants working in a British or international curriculum school.
Now available to international teaching assistants

Same professional status and standards as UK-based candidates
You’ll join a group of likeminded professionals from around the world - all working towards the same high-level qualification. And you’ll be guided by one of the UK’s most experienced HLTA providers, supporting thousands of candidates every year.
Why schools support HLTA training
This isn’t just a personal achievement. HLTA status benefits your whole school:
-
Schools gain staff who can reliably lead lessons
-
HLTAs help provide continuity of teaching when teachers are away
-
Research shows a positive impact on pupil outcomes
-
Teachers gain more time for planning, marking and targeted support
With HLTA-qualified staff, schools are more resilient, more efficient and better able to support every learner.
Many senior leaders actively encourage their teaching assistants to pursue HLTA - and fund their place on the course - because they see the impact it brings.
What Does the HLTA Course Involve?
The full process takes around 4–6 months and is designed to work around your role in school.
-
Two-day live online training: Focused workshops that introduce the HLTA standards and guide you through the assessment process
-
Independent study and portfolio building: You’ll complete written reflections and gather evidence from your role to show how you meet the standards
-
Online follow-up session: We support you as you finalise your tasks and check your progress
-
Remote assessment: A 2-hour online meeting with a qualified assessor who will review your evidence and speak with your school leadership
There’s no exam, no classroom observation and no travel required. Just a structured, supportive process that helps you shine in the role you’re already doing - at a higher level.
Do You Qualify?
HLTA is for experienced teaching assistants who:
-
Have Level 2 (GCSE or equivalent) qualifications in English and maths
- If you do not have Level 2 qualification we offer free equivalency tests. -
Have already supported whole-class learning (e.g. covered lessons)
-
Are working in an international or British curriculum school
-
Have the support of their headteacher or school leader
If that sounds like you - or one of your team - then this course is the next step.
